The idea behind the modern Olympics was that amateur athletes would meet in one place to compete against one another. In 1894 the IOC was founded. While the Olympics are no longer strictly for amateur competitors it is still a highly regarded and prestigious event. The Olympics have not always been popular. The 1904 Games had only 650 athletes 580 of them were from the United States. In 1906 the games regained their popularity. By 2008 205 different countries converged in Beijing. Nowadays, you can find collectibles from the summer and winter Olympics, including autographed baseballs, footballs, clubs, and other rare items used by players. Those five rings may be one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. The rings stand for Passion, Faith, Victory, Work ethic, and sportsmanship. |
